Offshore production of injection water

TOTAL GIRASSOL FPSO – OFFSHORE, ANGOLA

TOTAL, the world's fourth largest oil and gas company, is the operator of the Girassol FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) facility, approximately 200 kilometers off the coast of Angola.

With an oil production capacity of 200,000 barrels per day (8 million tons per year) and a storage capacity of two million barrels, it is one of the world's largest FPSOs.

During oil production, water is injected into the reservoir to establish an external water drive and maintain the reservoir pressure. One of the key issues for the operators is the quality of the injection water and the reliability of the water treatment unit, to prevent any sulphate scale formation in the well. The Girassol FPSO's injection water source is seawater.

Challenge:

  • Production of injection water from seawater on an offshore FPSO (Floating Production Storage Offloading) platform, approximately 200 kilometers off the coast of Angola.

Solution:

  • Design, build, operations & maintenance of a 64,000m³/day unit to produce injection water from seawater via membrane desulphation. The sulphate removal process is based on state-of-the-art nano filtration technology that selectively removes sulphate ions from seawater while allowing chlorides to pass through unfiltered, thereby maintaining the stability of the reservoir clay.

Customer benefits:

  • Space optimization through the use of a compact unit
  • Supply of consumables, parts and chemicals
