Veolia contracted to provide New Green Waste Service for Hobart to Cut Landfill Waste

The City of Hobart has awarded Veolia a contract for a new fortnightly kerbside green waste collection service.

Residents will be able to use the new kerbside service within the coming month; forming part of the Council’s strategy to eliminate waste disposed to landfill by 2030.

From early May, the service will be available to most residential homes in Hobart that are situated on blocks greater than 400sqm. The City will make services available for other residents dependent on tenancy and locations, whilst also providing the ability for residents who don’t qualify for services to opt-in if they wish.

Under the contract Veolia will collect around 12,000 green waste bins from properties in the Hobart municipal area every fortnight.

Veolia’s global and long-standing expertise in resource recovery will allow for the implementation of best-practice technologies to divert waste from landfill.

Veolia has been present in the region for over 40 years and employs more than 230 employees in Tasmania. The company is committed to the environmental prosperity of Tasmania, providing water, waste and energy solutions to the State and across Australia. Today’s announcement is yet another example of working with local council and residents to ensure the best social and environmental benefits for the State.

The Lord Mayor of Hobart, Alderman Sue Hickey commented on the new contract, “This City has a history of managing waste well and we are continually looking for new ways of improving and handling waste.  The kerbside green waste collection service is one such new initiative which will further improve the diversion of organic material from landfill.”

Veolia’s Group General Manager for Tasmania, Mr. Simon Tori, said “Veolia is excited to be part of providing this new service to the residents of Hobart to facilitate sustainable solutions for waste management.”
