Managing sustainable purchasing

Sustainable development has been a cornerstone of Veolia Environnement's purchasing policy since 2004. The company's sustainable purchasing policy focuses on three key issues in a bid to improve economic performance and ensure compliance with its commitments to corporate social responsibility.

Purchasing officers' commitment to sustainable development

Purchasing officers are given responsibilities toward the environmental and social implications of the company's activities so that those considerations enter into the officers' management of their specific purchasing areas. Thus, CSR issues are covered in Veolia Environnement's purchasing guidelines, actions to raise awareness take place regularly and training modules are offered.

Development of responsible purchasing practices

Purchasing officers' involvement in sustainable development issues motivates them to establish responsible purchasing practices. This means that they are more likely to take environmental certification, eco-design or total cost of ownership (TCO) into account in managing their purchases. Similarly, the purchasing officers also promote responsible practices in contract users, for example by encouraging better consumption habits, or by rewarding paperless orders or fewer deliveries.

Consideration of suppliers' commitment and CSR performance

Purchasing agents make sure that suppliers share the company's position on CSR and that the associated risks are managed throughout the process, from supplier selection to monitoring relations with the supplier. Procedures for supplier evaluation and audits are used to measure suppliers' CSR performance and implement improvement plans where necessary.

To better gauge the results of this policy, Veolia Environnement introduced performance indicators from 2009, incorporated into its Environmental Management System (EMS). These indicators make it possible to determine the company's performance in sustainable purchasing and better oversee related initiatives. The results are published in Veolia Environnement's CSR Performance digest.
