REDAL: Removing Pollution from the Atlantic Coast and the Bou Regreg Estuary - Rabat & Temara, Morocco

REMOVING COASTAL POLLUTION THROUGH WASTEWATER PRETREATMENT The cities of Rabat and Temara, with an estimated population of 1.5 million, were emptying their wastewater directly onto the Atlantic coast and the banks of the Bouregreg Wadi. This was doing serious harm to the environment and the region’s bathing waters. The waste also emitted odors that affected public health and harmed the appearance of the Atlantic coast and the banks of the estuary.

The commissioning of the entire pollution removal system, designed and installed by Redal, was completed in March 2013. The inauguration and launch of the wastewater pretreatment plant took place on 17 July 2013 and was hosted by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

It comprises:

  • Wastewater pretreatment plant with a capacity of 6m3/second
  • Marine water outlet with a length of 2.150 miles and a diameter of 2 metres
  • Six pumping stations with a capacity ranging from 100 to 1,200 l/second
  • 18 km of coastal interceptor sewers

This has allowed:

  • Removal of 26 discharge points along the Bou Regreg Wadi and 22 along the coast
  • Treatment of a daily waste water volume of 120,000 m3/day

The pollution removal program is part of a global trend towards sustainable development and aims to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants. Thanks to the scheme:

  • Waste is removed while preserving the environment and ecosystem of the river and coastline
  • Sanitary conditions have improved to preserve the health of the citizens of Rabat and Temara
  • The quality of bathing water has improved
  • The sea front has been enhanced
  • The economic, social and tourism aspects of the cities of Rabat and Temara have been developed
  • This attracts significant tourism investment projects thus creating opportunities for employment and wealth
