What is on site at North Bannister

  • Organic Resource Recovery Park (ORRP)
  • Engineered Landfill

North Bannister ORRP

Located at the North Bannister Resource Recovery Park, our Composting Park receives and processes household and commercial organic green waste from across Perth and south-west WA.

Each year the park converts around 23,000 tonnes of garden, food and agricultural waste into high-quality compost.

Composting Process

The Facility uses the MAF (Mobile Aerated Floor) composting system. Raw organic material is placed over a series of perforated pipes which an electrically powered fan-box pumps air through. This allows oxygen levels to be controlled every minute of the day – something that cannot be achieved with traditional compost turners.

The composting process takes around 12 weeks.

Composting Process

Compost products

Once processed, our quality compost is used in landscaping and agriculture to reduce water loss and add valuable carbon and nutrients to soils. In many cases, the compost will be used back in the Council areas where the garden waste was originally collected.

All compost products that leave the site are subject to rigid testing in accordance with Australian Standard AS4454 (composts, soil conditioners and mulches).

North Bannister Engineered Landfill (smart cells®)

After significant investigation, the site was selected due to its remote nature and the large distance to other land-uses and residential properties. The landfill receives general household and commercial waste, transferred from our Waste Transfer Station in Bibra Lake. Waste is unloaded, then pushed to the active tipping floor by a traxcavator. It is then compressed by a landfill compactor to reduce the amount of space taken up in the landfill cell.

Our landfill is secure, sophisticated and well-engineered to provide the best environmental outcome for waste that cannot be recycled. The modern landfill encompasses heavy-duty liner systems, leachate collection, ground and surface water management and litter control.
The first ‘cell’ opened in March 2015 and future cells will be constructed as required.
