Ready, set, sort! with TRYrecycling

The biggest under 16’s triathlon series in the world, the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon, kicks off its 2016 campaign on 31 January in Sydney, Australia.

Over 40,000 kids will swim, ride and run at 11 events across Australia. Not only will they be encouraged to TRY triathlon, they will also be encouraged to TRYrecycling.

In its third year as the official waste and recycling education partner, Veolia Australia aims to educate and assist Aussie families with better recycling practices. In 2016 kids and their families are encouraged to prove they are the recycling champion in their house and at their event, with Ready, Set, Sort!; a series of online and interactive games helping kids to learn more about the importance of recycling.

Managing Director of Veolia, Mr Doug Dean AM:

“Australia is at a unique turning point, we are some of the highest producers of waste per capita yet some of the best household recyclers in the world. The future of recycling and resource recovery rests with our young people.  As such, Veolia is proud to partner with the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon as we believe this is the perfect platform to encourage our children to both actively and positively contribute to reducing waste-related environmental impacts.”

During the 2015 Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon series, TRYrecycling diverted approximately3.3 tonnes of recycling from landfill, representing 55% of all waste generated during the series; up from 33% in 2014.

The associated webpage www.tryrecycling.com.au is proving to be an integral part of the TRYrecycling journey – from finding out how to recycle at each event to ways to improve recycling at home.

“Having Veolia as a partner with us on Kids TRYathlon fits neatly with Sanitarium’s purpose of engaging kids into choices around the health and wellbeing in their own lives as well as their community,” says Daniel Derrick, Sanitarium’s General Manager – Marketing.  “Participating in recycling waste at the event is a great practical lesson for the kids in caring for the world around them while having fun at Kids TRYathlon”.

While TRYathletes will be cheered all the way to the finish line by our All-Star TRY Hero team including Brett Lee, Stephanie Gilmore, Tim Cahill, Joel Selwood and others, they will be educated by the TRYrecycling team on where to place their recyclable rubbish when not on the course.

Now in its 18th year, the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon continues to encourage more Aussie kids to get healthy and active while building confidence with an additional layer of encouragement at the event and through digital communications to “TRYrecycling”.
