FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Over the last 27 years, Doug has been instrumental in cementing Veolia’s position as a leading provider of environmental solutions. When Doug started with Veolia, then Collex in 1991, the organisation was a waste transport business with more than 500 employees. Today, Veolia is an industry leader, employing over 4000 people across 200 locations throughout Australia and New Zealand. During his tenure, Doug oversaw a period of sustained growth and expansion, achieved through numerous successful acquisitions and joint ventures across the region. As a result, Veolia has built its capability across the water, waste and energy sectors and now serves an impressive array of industrial, municipal and commercial clients.
A STORY OF EXTRAORDINARY GROWTH & TRANSFORMATION
The transformation of Veolia over the past 27 years marks many professional and personal highlights for Doug. In 1998, Veolia, then Collex, engaged in its first indigenous employment partnership for the construction of the Botany Transfer Station in NSW. This initiative made the organisation one of the first corporate entities to provide hands-on employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians.
The acquisition of Middlemass Industrial Services, Aqualine Australia and Vactech from 1998-2000 expanded the business into industrial services, working with heavy industries including mining, refining and off-shore exploration and processing. Providing the opportunity to participate in the mining boom In Woodlawn, 250 km south of Sydney, ambitious plans to turn an abandoned mine into a bioreactor landfill with rail transportation of waste from Sydney was visionary and required not only leading technical solutions, but robust political engagement to create a new regulatory environment. Perhaps though the true highlight has been the success of Veolia’s community engagement. When the Veolia Mulwaree Trust was established in 2005, it offered a unique model of collaboration and investment in a regional community. In 2014, Veolia embarked on its biggest transformation to date; combining business lines across water, waste and energy into a single business.
A NEW ERA FOR VEOLIA
Veolia is pleased to announce Danny Conlon has been appointed as Veolia’s CEO and Managing Director, effective July 1st, 2018 and will be responsible for overseeing the continued growth and success of Veolia’s expansive portfolio of water, waste and energy operations.
Veolia’s appointment is a clear reflection of the company’s current state: ensuring ongoing long-term stability, yet poised for growth.
Danny celebrates 20 years with Veolia in 2018, and his succession from Doug will afford Veolia agility, consistency and a readiness to act in a period of enduring market change. He commenced his career within the business as a Waste Collection Operations Manager, moving into a number of positions before most recent role, as the Executive General Manager for Veolia’s East-Coast Operations (NSW, QLD, VIC & TAS), which he has held since 2014.
