Lion - Creating greater efficiencies in production and waste management

THE CHALLENGE

Lion is one of Australasia’s largest food and beverage companies, employing more than 7,000 people across Australia and New Zealand. With a history extending back to 1840, Lion market premium brands in the dairy, juice, soy, beer, cider, fine wine and non-alcohol beverages categories.

Lion’s environmental approach is governed by the simple mantra of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ aligned with Veolia’s expertise in waste management.

As a large manufacturer and purchaser of agricultural goods, their priorities are on reducing waste-related environmental impacts, and a necessary consideration as part of this goal was to look at opportunities to capitalise upon in production.

 

THE SOLUTION

In 2013, Veolia successfully extended its contract with Lion for commercial waste services across 10 sites around Australia. This builds on an existing agreement established in 2010.

Veolia provide the following services nationally:
  • Disposal and recovery of all general waste and recyclable materials through specialised compactors, balers, product destruction resource recovery units, front lift, rear lift and bulk services
  • Exporting commodities to maximise commodity value for the client
  • Waste education
  • Waste-related Greenhouse Gas (GHG) minimisation and reporting.

IMPROVING COMMODITY VALUES THROUGH PROCESS INNOVATION
Lion employs lean manufacturing principles at all of its production sites and Veolia has implemented processes to complement these methodologies including:
  • using equipment technologies to increase commodity values and increase diversion from landfill
  • instigating ‘separation at a source’ to dramatically reduce landfill amounts, minimise contamination and decrease costs
  • worked closely with Lion’s waste champions to ensure that these processes continue to run efficiently.

Through Veolia’s environmental service offering, Lion has benefited through:
  • Reduced environmental footprint across Australia
  • Reduced labour costs
  • Improved recycling rates
  • Increased commodity values
  • Increased diversion from landfill with problematic waste streams
  • Upskilled workforce with a training program custom-designed for staff.

Veolia has assisted Lion reduce its waste to landfill and implement innovative recovery solutions for problematic waste streams including out of date products.  While costs in landfill continue to increase each year, Veolia has still been able to reduce their overall operational spend due to better commodity values, increased recycling volumes, minimising waste-to-landfill and reducing labour costs.
