Quarantine Waste

Quarantine waste can be any product that has come into Australia or New Zealand from overseas and is deemed unsuitable for entry into Australia without prior treatment.

This may include material used to pack or stabilise cargo, food waste from overseas vessels, imported goods which cannot meet import conditions, by-products from treatment of imported goods; and items seized during quarantine inspections.

International vessels, aircraft, persons and goods arriving into the country present pathways for pests and diseases to enter which is a risk to human health and the environment. Under the Biosecurity Act 2015, any wastes identified as having a biosecurity risk must be managed in accordance under strict quarantine requirements.

It is important to segregate quarantine waste from other waste streams as any contamination with quarantine waste will need to be disposed of in a more controlled manner.
