Antoine Frérot began with a reminder about the main issues that will impact [Veolia’s business activities](/en/veolia-group/profile/business-activities) in 2040; because to be useful, a company must tackle the issues of its time:

- [feed 9 billion people](/en/newsroom/press-day-2018/how-do-we-feed-9-billion-people-in-2040) as soil, water and energy resources become scarcer
- meet [energy demand that is set to increase by 30%](/en/newsroom/press-day-2018/how-do-we-meet-30-percent-higher-energy-demand-2040), while preserving resources and fighting global warming
- [limit air, soil and water pollution](/en/newsroom/press-day-2018/how-do-we-fight-water-soil-and-air-pollution), while continuing to support economic development
- Fight [resource scarcity](https://www.parlonsensembleduclimat.veolia.com/en/economy-circular-raw-materials-scarcities) by generalizing the circular economy.

## New skills have to be acquired

> "To achieve this, new skills based on exact sciences will be required: life sciences - biology, biotechnology, medicine, green chemistry and biomimicry - as well as energy sciences (thermodynamics, energy storage), materials and digital technology. In addition, the human sciences will help us understand the physical and human interactions between all these new activities. Linking all these elements more effectively will take more multidisciplinarity, creativity, curiosity and ability to understand the world," concluded **Antoine Frérot.**
