An increasingly key resource

In the arid regions, such as the Middle East, water availability is a crucial issue, making it very hard to satisfy local water needs with traditional resources.

As Seawater covers 71% of the earth's surface and represents 97% of the world's water and as almost 60% of the world's population lives less than 60 km from a maritime coast, deploying seawater, brackish water and wastewater desalination procedures can augment available water resources. It also has the advantage of reducing water dependency on other regions and eliminating the need to import and transport water over long distances.

With 12 million cubic meters of water produced per day, Veolia is the global leader in desalination. Through specialized companies, Veolia has built 15% of the world's desalination capacity, which is expected to double in 10 years.

Proven technologies

For 160 years, Veolia has been working to optimize the performance of the clients' desalination processes, both in terms of their environmental impact and energy use.

Veolia’s all-encompassing range of solutions is dedicated to increasing the value of water resources. Combined with local presence and a worldwide network of experts, Veolia ensures its clients the best possible solutions to supply high quality water, manage brine concentrates, produce or recover energy, extract raw materials and capitalize on by-products.

Veolia has an expertise in the major types of desalination solutions: Multi-Stage Flash Distillation (MSF), Multiple Effect Distillation (MED), Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Hybrid desalination which couples MED and RO.

A unique expertise

Veolia constantly focuses on improving desalination performance, cutting costs, and reducing their impact on the marine environment as well as energy consumption.

Veolia is the only company in the world to master both MED and Reverse Osmosis and to offer energy-efficient hybrid desalination. Veolia has also developed a patented technology to protect from Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB). Spidflow®, Dissolved Air Floatation, has been -among others- in successful operation since 2011 in Fujairah plant.
