Optimization of water management for a gold mine

ANGLOGOLD ASHANTI - IDUAPRIEM, GHANA Water is key in the mining industry and used within a broad range of activities including mineral processing, dust suppression, slurry transport and employee needs. Veolia, through its subsidiary Veolia Ghana Limited, operates and maintains the existing water treatment facility at Iduapriem, Ghana, and supplies process optimization. The mine is located in the Western Region of Ghana.

Iduapriem Mine faces a climate with high seasonal temperature variations and the alternation of dry and wet periods. When seasonal patterns provide very high rainfall for only a few months, water must be managed cautiously to avoid flooding of operations which could lead to water contamination and potential health and safety issues.

Moreover, gold extraction in particular requires the use of cyanide, a hazardous material used to dissolve and separate gold from ore.

Veolia provides the best management and operational expertise to ensure proper water treatment and discharge compliant with the Ghana EPA effluent discharge requirements. Managing water responsibly and ensuring that adverse impacts on local and regional water resources are avoided (particularly cyanide issue) is key to a successful water management in the mining sector. That’s why it is important to collaborate with a reliable partner.
