In Tangier, Renault thrives on biomass!

In Tangier, Morocco, Veolia uses olive pomace as fuel to meet the thermal energy requirements of the Renault factory. A solution which enabled the site to become the first car manufacturing plant to achieve zero CO2 emissions.

The Renault plant in Tangier produces nearly 200,000 Dacia vehicles per year, with a maximum capacity of 60 vehicles per hour. The aim of the partnership between Renault and Veolia was to meet the site’s thermal energy requirements without emitting any carbon.
Starting from 2012, Veolia set up a production unit on the site - made up of three biomass boilers with a combined thermal power of 18MW - designed to cover 100% of the plant’s thermal needs. It produces the hot water needed for the plant’s industrial processes.

Turning agricultural waste into a 100% renewable energy source

The biomass plants are fueled by olive pomace - a residue from the olive oil industry - composed of skins, pulp and crushed kernels. As Morocco is a major olive oil producer, this local biofuel is available in large quantities.

Built to support the increase in production of the site, the biomass boilers consume nearly 25,000 tons of residue per year. 97% of the thermal energy used by the site now comes from renewable sources. In 2014, 25,000 tons of CO2 emissions were thus avoided.
