The Siroco project was launched in 2009, on the initiative of the Société d’Economie Mixte pour l’Elimination des Déchets Industriels de la Basse-Seine (SEMEDI).
Project objective: capture, concentrate and recycle some of the CO2 present in the plant’s flue gases.
The recovered CO2 then goes through a gas transport network to two industrial sites which use it as a raw material in the production of lubricant additives. Sent in the form of gas, it replaces liquid CO2 which is energy-intensive to manufacture (usually delivered by truck, because it is produced outside Le Havre’s port area).
Between 2011 and 2013, the project was tested in a pilot unit, which demonstrated the technical feasibility of the operation and optimized the quality of the CO2 produced. The experiment subsequently made it possible to set up an industrial unit, based on customer needs, with a capacity of 12,000 tons of CO2 per year (the equivalent of the annual emissions of about 1,500 French people.)
