Veolia and the Tara Ocean Foundation, are organizing their first ecological hackathon fromJune 25 to June27, 2021, announced on June 8, 2021, World Oceans Day.
On the program: students from all over the world, 48 hours of coding, AI and data to imagine a low- power solution to facilitate the work of teams of scientists studying the oceans and the consequences of climate change on ocean life.biotopes.
You are a student, passionate about coding, artificial intelligence, data? You want to contribute to the fight against climate change and the protection of the oceans?
Put together a team of 2 to 4 students, andsign up for the PlankThon Challenge!
On the weekend of June 26th and 27th, in teams of 2 to 4 students, you will have 48 hours to imagine a way to qualify the database composed of hundreds of thousands of plankton photos, from the current expedition of Tara Ocean Fundation. With a constraint: the solution must be low power (to be used on a Raspberry Pi for example). And a specific request: to imagine the best way to visualize the data (data viz). Eventually, the solution will be embarked on the Tara shooner to work with the Planktoscope (developed by the Plankton Planet and Stanford University).
The 8 best teams at the end of the 48-hour challenge will be invited to pitch their solution on July 1st, in front of a jury of experts from Veolia, Tara and the Villefranche/Sorbonne University Oceanography Laboratory. The 3 best teams will be awarded Raspberry items and "low power" accesoiries worth a total of €20,000.
The winning team will also have the privilege of discovering the shooner and meeting the Tara Ocean Foundation team when they return from the Microbiomes Mission in Lorient, in Octoberer 2022. A great opportunity to see their solution at work...
The Tara Ocean Foundation, first recognized public interest foundation in France dedicated to the world’s oceans, is leading a scientific revolution: The Foundation has developed an open, innovative Ocean science that will enable us to predict, anticipate and better manage tomorrow’s climate risks. Our two key-missions: exploring and sharing. To make the ocean a common responsibility and preserve it, the Tara Ocean Foundation raises awareness and educates young people to protect this vital ecosystem.
