What does it take to future-proof oil & gas and chemical operations for the ecological transformation?

Oil & gas and chemical sectors: navigating the dual mandate

The oil & gas and chemical sectors operate at the intersection of economic performance and environmental responsibility, facing a dual mandate: maintaining economic viability while actively advancing the energy transition.

Limiting environmental impact and ensuring sustainability

Decarbonization is no longer optional, it is a business imperative. Companies must reduce emissions across their operations, including methane leaks, while responsibly managing critical resources such as water and energy, particularly in water-stressed regions. Beyond regulatory compliance, social acceptability has become a key driver, with stakeholders demanding greater transparency to build trust within local communities and ecosystems.

Reducing costs to stay competitive

In an industry defined by intense competition and highly volatile prices, cost reduction is essential to survival. Achieving operational and energy efficiency is critical to preserving margins without compromising performance or safety standards.

Optimizing production yield and asset reliability

Maximizing output while extending the lifespan of industrial assets is a constant priority. Optimizing production yield and ensuring asset reliability allow companies to protect their investments, minimize downtime, and sustain long-term operational performance.

Meeting these interconnected challenges requires integrated, innovative solutions that align profitability with sustainability: turning constraints into opportunities for long-term resilience and growth.

Oil & gas and chemicals challenges

Optimizing Water as a Strategic Asset

Water is an essential, indispensable element driving the Oil & Gas and chemical industries. Used in diverse forms such as high-pressure steam, circulating cooling water, or produced as a byproduct its specific qualities are fundamental to every critical stage of the industrial process. Responsible water management requires balancing operational demands with the essential water requirements of local populations and surrounding ecosystems, making water stewardship integral to sustainable industrial operations.

Water Management and Efficiency

Decarbonizing oil & gas and chemical operations

Decarbonizing industrial steam is central to a sustainable energy transition for the oil & gas and chemical industry, as it is mission-critical for facility operations. With tightening regulations and shifting markets, securing low-carbon thermal energy is a strategic necessity, not an optional initiative. Integrating decarbonized energy is key to long-term competitiveness, regulatory resilience, and future-readiness in a carbon-constrained economy.

Decarbonizing for the Oil & Gas and Chemical industry

Turning waste into value with total compliance

The oil & gas and chemical industry faces critical waste management challenges: specialized handling and proper containment of hazardous waste (cuttings, tank bottoms, sludge), managing air emissions (VOCs, GHGs), mitigating severe environmental risks from spills and leaks, ensuring strict global regulatory compliance, and prioritizing waste minimization through circular economy principles and operational efficiency.

How can we drive high performance and low impact for the oil & gas and chemical industries?

Thanks to its expertise in water, waste and energy management, Veolia implements tailored solutions for oil & gas and chemical companies to:

1. Decarbonization & energy transition

  • Accelerating decarbonization: Help our customers decarbonize by securing low-carbon thermal energy solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Ensuring industrial continuity: Improve asset reliability and optimize energy flows, allowing facilities to maintain peak output while advancing their energy transition goals.

2. Water security & resource circularity

  • Responsible water stewardship: Optimize the water cycle and recycle process water, significantly reducing freshwater consumption in water-stressed regions. This balances industrial demand with ecosystem needs, safeguarding your production and ensuring long-term water availability.
  • Turning waste into resources: Apply circular economy principles by recovering and valorizing by-products, transforming them into reusable resources to reduce your ecological footprint and minimize raw material dependency.

3. Risk mitigation & compliance

  • Advanced environmental protection:  Provide specialized handling of hazardous waste and manage complex emissions to mitigate risks and protect the surrounding environment.
  • Regulatory & social license to operate: Ensure full compliance with global regulations and support transparent ESG reporting, strengthening social acceptability and community trust.

The energy and chemical sectors stand at a defining crossroads: tightening regulations, volatile markets, and environmental expectations are no longer obstacles to navigate around they are the very forces reshaping competitive advantage. At Veolia, we believe that every regulatory constraint carries within it the seed of an operational opportunity. Our mission is to help our customers turn that pressure into performance.

Chongqing

China

Using cogeneration to supply steam to more than 80 factories

We operate a cogeneration power plant at the Chongqing Changshou Chemical Industrial Park, designed to meet local manufacturers’ growing demand for energy and provide a secure supply of steam for industrial uses. The plant has been supplying steam to over 80 factories since 2013.

ARNHEM

Netherlands

Contribute to developing an “eco-industrial park”

In Arnhem, we are involved in the development of the Industriepark Kleefse Waard, a more sustainable, environmentally friendly and waste-free industrial park. We supply clean electricity, heat and steam to industries from a biomass-fired plant. We also treat the wastewater.

TIANJIN

China

Maximizing water reuse in a part of the world subject to severe water stress

In 2007, we were tasked by one of China’s leading chemical companies, Tianjin Soda, to design, finance, build and operate all water-related installations at its Tianjin plant. Over 150,000 cubic meters of water pass through the site’s three cooling circuits every hour. We guarantee safe, reliable and cost-effective operations at the plant. And we also optimize water use, with a 60% water reuse rate that limits the impact on local water resources.
