The Tarkett Group, a global leader in flooring and sports surface solutions, has chosen Veolia to help accelerate the deployment of its ReStart® program, an activity set up in 2010 for the collection and reuse of flooring. As part of this program, Veolia will collect and sort resilient post-installation flooring off-cuts from Tarkett’s customers in the building industry. The flooring collected and sorted is recycled in Tarkett’s production sites. This partnership covers the whole of France and the potential of developing this into other geographical areas and materials is being explored.
In 2015, Tarkett adapted its ReStart® program to offer a more comprehensive and competitive recycling service for the key stakeholders in the building industry, with the ambition of increasing the volumes of collected and recycled post-installation flooring five-fold for the French market by 2020.
Veolia, a leader in recycling and waste management, will help to increase the amount of products collected and sorted, thus supporting the growth of the Tarkett ReStart® program. Veolia Group offers a collection system which is better adapted to the building industry with a strong national network of existing infrastructure. This partnership is the first reference for Veolia’s Waste activity in France, linked to the management and recovery of different product categories for building sector professionals.
« For several years, Tarkett has been committed to a transition to a circular economy by applying Cradle to Cradle® principles across all its activities. The ReStart® collection and recycling program is one of the cornerstones of our commitment to closing the material loop. This partnership with Veolia enables us to offer our clients a better collection and recycling service, whilst increasing the volumes and quality of recycled input in our flooring. It also illustrates the capacity of the private sector to offer solutions that support sustainable economic growth,” explains Remco Teulings, President Tarkett EMEA.
« Our collaboration with the Tarkett Group illustrates our complementary expertise in developing a closed-loop circular economy on an industrial scale. We are proud to support Tarkett in the deployment of an activity that can replace virgin raw material by recycled raw material in the manufacturing of new flooring. The circular economy is a dynamic driving the development of new industrial partnerships, and a real lever for economic growth” explains Bernard Harambillet, Chief Executive Officer of Veolia’s Waste Recycling & Recovery business in France.
Tarkett and Veolia are both members of the World Economic Forum and the Circular Economy 100 network, where the two companies engage in several projects and discussions to stimulate the acceleration of the Circular Economy on an international scale.
1. Collection of vinyl and linoleum flooring off-cuts from installation projects or from all stakeholders involved across the value chain in the building sector (installation companies, general contractors, wholesalers, etc.) done by Veolia.
2. Sorting in Veolia centers in order to guarantee the quality of scrap before it is integrated into the manufacturing process for new flooring.
3. Recycling and re-using of materials in Tarkett’s own production sites in Luxembourg (Clervaux), Italy (Narni) and Sweden (Ronneby) to manufacture new quality flooring.
Tarkett and Veolia ensure the full traceability of off-cuts collected and sorted for all building industry professionals who participate in the ReStart® program. Tarkett goes beyond legislation and with its ReStart® program is able to anticipate on the requirements of European regulations, which seeks the recovery and reuse of 70% of materials by the building industry (article 11 of the European Directive 2008/98/CE).
