Sludge & Slurry Waste

Sludge is thick, soft, wet mixture of liquid and solid components. Slurry is a thin, sloppy, wet mixture of liquid and solid components.

Sludge and slurry are by-products of industrial, refining or wastewater treatment processes. Depending on the industry, it can contain non-hazardous water, mud, oils, biosolids or other debris. Filter cakes is are designed to remove contaminants from sludge tanks and also require disposal after they have served their purpose.

Biosolids are treated or stabilised sewage sludge, produced during the biological treatment of sewage. Biosolids contain significant quantities of organic matter, moisture, nutrients and trace elements, and can be reused as a resource for agriculture.

Sludge and slurry waste waste can be stored in holding tanks or packaged in drums, intermediate bulk containers or approved small containers.

How do we handle sludge and slurry waste?

Veolia’s highly trained and experienced team can safely collect, treat and correctly dispose your sludge and slurry waste at one of our licensed liquid waste treatment facilities. We utilise an innovative range of sludge harvesting and processing technologies as part of our complete waste management solution.

Our specialised waste fleet ensures we can collect and dispose of any type of liquid waste and volumes that your business produces. Waste can be removed via vacuum tanker for bulk volumes or packaged for safe transportation and disposal with our pantech trucks. We provide tracking and documentation to ensure your business complies with regulations.

Our licensed liquid waste treatment facilities meet strict EPA guidelines and are operated by highly trained and experienced personnel. Sludge and slurry processing solutions depend on the volume and contaminants present.

The state-of-the-art centrifuge application is generally applied to the recovery of oil from crude oil tanks. The centrifuge works by spinning a stainless steel drum whilst simultaneously introducing the contaminated oil, and within this spinning, gravity is increased and aided by the possible heat and flocculants, the oil and water become separated.

A belt press is suitable for large volumes of sludge that can be “easily” dewatered. The pre-work ensures that the correct flocculants and or coagulant is used to allow ease of dewatering and containment of the sludge on the belt. Sludge drying helps reduce sludge volume and minimise nuisances anz maximises the recovered value of sludge.

Clean liquids can be released to sewage, contaminated liquid can be further processed and treated at our liquid treatment plant. Depending on the composition of sludge or slurry, the remaining muds and solids will be disposed of at landfill or if sludge contains grease, fats or oils, it can be reused by organic processing facilities in their composting process or applied to agricultural pastures.

Sludge incineration can be used to eliminate large quantities of sludge efficiently, diverting waste from landfill.

Why choose Veolia for your sludge and slurry waste?

Veolia has a dedicated team committed to providing a professional service to all clients. We have the capability to collect all volumes of sludge and slurry waste, from small quantities, to bulk containers and large tanks. Our collection services are available 24 hours a day with quick response times and emergency response.

We adhere to the highest standards of safety and compliance to regulations, so you can trust that your waste is being managed responsibly.
