E-waste

Electronic waste or e-waste is discarded, surplus, obsolete, or broken electrical or electronic devices. This may include computers, photocopiers, printers, batteries, mobile phones, wiring, printer cartridges, CDs and DVDs and small appliances.

These materials can contain hazardous substances such as lead and mercury, that are harmful to the environment. There electronic waste needs to be recycled properly to minimise risks.

How do we handle e-waste?

Veolia has proven capability in the collection and recycling of your electronic waste. Our e-waste collection and recycling service is a simple, effective and proven way to achieve high recycling rates for electronic waste.

Your electronic waste is collected either using pallets or bulk bins and then sent to our E-waste recycling facility. E-waste (including computers, printers, copiers, PABX etc) are manually dismantled and sorted into the respective recyclable parts for further processing. All glass, plastics and metals are recycled given a 95% recycling rate.

Fluorescent Lighting

Fluorescent lighting waste includes spent or used fluorescent (fluoro) tubes and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).

They are popular lighting choices because of their energy efficiency, however they contain mercury which is a hazardous material that may cause harm to people and the environment.

It is important to segregate fluorescent lighting waste from general waste stream as they contain resources that can be recycled and reused such as glass, aluminium and other metals. Recycling fluorescent lighting diverts waste and toxic materials from landfill.

Does Veolia collect fluorescent lighting waste?

Veolia’s highly trained and experienced team can safely collect and recycle your  fluorescent lighting at our specialist recycling facility.
We can provide specialised containers for your fluorescent lighting waste. These are then collected by our hazardous waste fleet and transported to our recycling facility, where the lamps are separated into aluminum, glass, phosphor powder and mercury components.

The lamps are crushed in an enclosed environment and non-hazardous materials are removed. Aluminium is the main metal recovered and can be resold as a commodity to be reused in other processes. Glass is also recovered and reused.

Phosphor powder is heated and releases the mercury as vapour which can be condensed into metal. The recovered mercury can be reused and the treated phosphor powder can be used to make new fluorescent tubes.

Battery Waste

Battery waste includes used or depleted consumer batteries, car batteries, batteries from electronic equipment and industrial batteries.

They can contain lead, alkaline, nickel and lithium, which are harmful to the environment if not disposed of appropriately.

It is important to segregate battery waste from general waste stream as they contain resources that can be recycled and reused. As batteries start to break down in landfill, the heavy metals they contain can leach into surface and groundwater, polluting the environment and causing potential harm to humans and wildlife.

Does Veolia collect battery waste?

Veolia’s highly trained and experienced team can safely collect and recycle or dispose your battery waste at one of our specialist recycling facility.

The batteries are broken apart into pieces and placed into a vat, where the lead and heavy materials fall to the bottom.

The lead, cadmium and nickel within batteries can be removed and recycled for future use in metal making processes. Most materials can be resold as a commodity. Lead can be cleaned and heated within smelting furnaces and poured into ingot moulds. The ingots can be and sent to battery manufacturers, to be reused in the production of new batteries.

In some instances, the plastic and acid within the battery can be separated and may also be recycled. The acid can be neutralized at one our liquid treatment facilities and released to sewage or processed and converted to sodium sulphate to be reused in manufacturing. Clean scrap metal can then be sold to metal recyclers.
