In support of both the Northern Territory and Federal Government’s initiative to achieve greater outcomes for our local environment through increased resource recovery and diversion from landfill, Veolia operates a mixed recycling and autoclave facility at Beaton Rd, the latter of which is capable of effectively treating quarantined waste from heavy industry.
Berrimah plays an integral role within the provision of a sustainable solution for the Territory’s waste and recycling. The Beaton Rd site is comprised of several key sustainable and innovative elements including:
- Wastewater Treatment Plant
Veolia operates an Electro DAF wastewater treatment system, a best-practice technology which is designed to separate waste-oil and water. The oil is then reused by industry with the treated water released by PowerWater.
- Packaged Waste Recycling
Cardboard and packaging waste received from local businesses in and around Darwin is segregated, baled and transported to Veolia’s Kilburn site in Adelaide for processing.
- Autoclaving Treatment
Veolia's autoclaving vessel is the only clean and effective treatment technique used to process quarantine waste, as it involves the high -pressure, high-temperature sterilisation of waste by steam, which consequently destroys all bacteria within. It is the only facility of its kind available within the Northern Territory.
What types of waste are received at the facility ?
Veolia’s Berrimah facility is capable of receiving various types of materials which are processed and transported offsite to several recyclers. The packaged liquid waste, once consolidated is delivered to Veolia’s processing facility in Adelaide using enclosed waste collection vehicles.
Waste oil is received and processed using an Electro DAF wastewater treatment system; the waste-oil and water is separated, with the oil being recycled and used by industry and the water released by PowerWater.
Veolia’s Berrimah site also receives quarantine waste under the direction of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFFF) for treatment in the autoclave. These autoclave services are the only clean and effective method o f processing offshore waste, ensuring that the bio-security of northern Australia is protected.
Where does this waste originate from ?
The majority of waste is received from industrial customers in and around the Darwin area. It is delivered to Veolia’s facility by a number of purpose-built waste collection vehicles.
Does Veolia have a traffic management plan in place ?
Yes, Veolia has implemented a traffic management plan to control traffic movement for entering and exiting the Berrimah site.
How does Veolia mitigate odour ?
Veolia uses international best-practice systems to ensure air quality and adequate odour control. All quarantine waste received at the facility will be containerised in purpose built sealed shipping containers to minimize any odour prior to processing through the autoclave.
How does Veolia work with local communities in which it operates ?
Veolia is firmly committed to the communities within which we work, recognising that we need to form partnerships with the community if we are to work effectively. Veolia has extensive experience working with local communities, including developing waste education programs for local councils, schools and interested community groups and establishing community liaison groups within the areas we operate.
